RESOLVING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
ESSENTIAL INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER
Installing baby gates requires a degree of skill; attempting this task without the involvement of an expert may lead to safety risks and unexpected expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have understood and accepted the terms and conditions stated here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios detailed below highlight various challenges I have encountered during installations, which may mirror your experiences and offer practical solutions.
CHALLENGE 1: INSTALLING ON AN UNEVEN SURFACE
ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the appropriate size for the gate and any extensions needed. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- After obtaining the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate precisely, adhering to the specifications shown in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you intend to cut out and fit it into the modified part of the gate to ensure the correct placement of the tension knob.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate in hand.
CHALLENGE 2: INSTALLING ON A SKEW WALL
SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF INSTALLING ON A SKEW WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are prepared prior to installation.
- Utilise Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely fasten the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all steps are completed and the gate has been thoroughly tested for stability.
CHALLENGE 3: INSTALLING BABY GATES OUTDOORS
MANAGING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
While installing baby gates outside may seem like a quick and economical solution, it could potentially void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend considering outdoor installations of baby gates only as a temporary and cost-effective solution. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are unsuitable for outdoor applications due to potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- This limitation is explicitly mentioned in the warranty documentation accompanying the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty conditions will lead to the nullification of warranty coverage.
For a durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. While this may incur higher costs, it is the most reliable approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures assure complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate under South African climate conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly decrease the likelihood of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the base surfaces as well.
- Drill holes at the base of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This allows for water drainage, preventing rust from forming inside the hollow gate where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes facilitate ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow the coating to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black hue, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
